Project Summary
A group of 53 students from 15 schools in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) , ranging from elementary to high school, formed Clarksville Youth Care Group to help the community fight the health crisis during the world wide COVID19 pandemic. They have made 3660 reusable heavy-duty DIY face shields and donated them to 101 different essential groups (46 hospitals, 4 urgent cares, 18 dental offices, 12 specialist clinics, 21 first-Responders) over 7 states (MD, VA, NY, NJ, FL, MO and OR).
The group started from the Clarksville area (CMS, AHS and RHHS) and expanded to the entire Howard county. From March 2020 to August 2020, they have undergone 4 different phases of the project, each time making improvements based on feedback from doctors and nurses. The project first started after Johns Hopkins released their DIY face shield procedures. This student run group established the full workflow to produce the face shields from scratch, including fundraising, material ordering, material pre-processing and distribution, making tutorial videos, volunteer recruiting and training, face shield assembling and collection, quality-control, hospital outreach, face shield delivery and shipping, feedback collection, and product improvement.
The project was funded by GoFundMe, community donations, and parent contributions. The group also received sponsorships from real estate agent Shun Lu, Ivy mortgage Inc, We Care NPO, Greater Capital Area Investors Association (GCAIA), and Science Systems and Application, Inc (SSAI). The River Hill Moms WeChat group helped a lot in the phase 2 of the project. Medical workers or first-responders can request free face shields.
WBALTV-11 reported the group activity on April 22. Baltimore Sun featured the group story on May 5.
Johns Hopkins honored the group in its Hopkins Highlight (4/10/2020). Holy Cross hospital thanks the group's donation on Facebook (5/28/2020). They also received many appreciation letters from hospitals.
Maryland governor Larry Hogan honored the group on his Facebook page on May 8, saying “Sometimes the worst times have a way of bringing out the very best in people, and Marylanders are a shining example of that. I want to sincerely thank these young Marylanders for making and donating 1,200 face shields for our health care heroes, and all of the generous individuals, organizations, and small businesses who are finding creative ways to support our state’s COVID-19 response. We are all in this together, and we will get through this together. ”
